In case of any accident or crime, do not hesitate to dial 110.
If it’s not an emergency, you can consult with the police by dialing #9110. English is available.

Police Box (Koban)
If you have lost or left your belongings somewhere, get lost or fall victim to theft, head to the nearest police box (koban).
They can handle all kinds of issues. Feel free to count on them.

Crime Prevention
Luggage Theft and Pick-pocketing
Keep your belongings close to you. Don’t take your eyes off your bags.
Don’t leave your bags open. It’s a good idea to use bags with zippers or to carry your backpack in front of you on trains.

Street Touts and Rip-offs
Street touts and rip-offs targeting foreigners are on the rise.
Some of them lure you to their partner bars, and while you are drunk, charge excessive fees or use your credit card without your knowledge.
Do not follow street touts under any circumstance.

Avoiding Troubles and Following Japanese Custom
Drinking
It’s not Japanese custom to hug or kiss in public. When you are drunk, avoid hugging people without their consent.
Out of respect, make sure not to be too loud on trains, buses or on the street.

Lining Up
It is Japanese custom to stand in line to get on public transportation or at checkout counters at stores. Please don’t cut in.
Keep in mind that sometimes there are several registers but only one line.
Make sure your luggage does not block the way.

Laws to Observe
Carry Your Passport at All Times
All foreigners in Japan must carry proper documentations at all times.
Always carry your passport, and present it when asked by police officers.

Illegal Substances
Marijuana, cocaine, and stimulants are considered illegal substances in Japan. Drug dealers have been known to target overseas tourists.
Never possess any illegal substance. Never bring them into Japan. You can be arrested for possessing even a small amount of illegal substances.


Traffic Rules
Every country has different traffic rules. In Japan, you must drive on the left.
Obey all traffic lights and use crosswalks at all times.
Be sure to review and follow Japanese traffic regulations.
Stay safe and have an accident-free trip.

Drones
Flying drones is prohibited in most areas of Tokyo.
A permit or a special approval is required to operate a drone.

Littering and Illegal Dumping
Please do not litter on streets or public spaces.
Abandoning suitcases can be considered a crime in some cases.
Please be respectful and take your suitcases home with you.

Prostitution
In Japan, any act of soliciting sex for payment is illegal.
“Badger game” type activity has been reported in Japan. This involves luring unsuspecting victims with promises of sex, only to then be accosted by other parties demanding payment or other type of blackmail.
